The ground below wasn’t a hazard—it was a verdict: five meters onto unyielding, uneven rock. Permanent disability or death.

In the breath between one reality and the next, a coworker, John, moved with impossible speed. He lunged, one hand grabbed the top of the bucket’s lip, and his other hand locked around Reuben’s wrist in a grip that defied physics and fate. That single, anchored point of contact was all that stood between a life lived and a life ended.

It was the third such brush with oblivion in a year. This time, however, the question it asked was answered not with fear, but with a profound and instantaneous knowing. He finished his shift that day. He worked the next. The fear of death had been burned away in that moment, replaced by a cold, clear certainty: something else was at work. He recently concluded his career as an operator of one of the industry’s most formidable machines, the Sandvik 422i Jumbo. He retired from mining at the age of 49, no richer in material terms than the day he began, but immeasurably wealthy in the only currency that truly matters: wisdom, experience, and a heart fortified by love, humility, and authentic power.
